Should You Buy NBA The Run? My Honest Review

THE DIFFERENT NERD rates the open beta 7.5/10: great presentation and squad fun, but online-only at launch and still needs more content.

What it is

Arcade 3v3 basketball in the NBA Street Vol. 2 / NBA Jam lineage — same dev DNA as Street Vol. 2. Not for simulation or 2K-style players; built for flashy, fast pickup games with friends.

What works

Presentation is a standout: vibrant menus, strong player models, and Bobbito Garcia atmosphere. Animations improved a lot from first playtest to open beta, though still not final.

Gameplay went from bland in playtest one to genuinely fun in beta — rewarding wins, clear reasons for losses, no pay-to-win. Team building and coordination matter.

Online was smooth: fast matchmaking, almost no lag, one disconnect in hours of play. Defense and offense feel balanced and competitive.

What's missing

Online-only at launch — no offline mode yet, which may turn off solo players. Occasional ball physics bugs between matches but nothing game-breaking.

Wants more depth in moves, animations, modes, and roster updates over time.

Who should buy

Great for Street Vol. 2 fans, online competitive players, and anyone wanting a less serious alternative to 2K. Skip if you want simulation realism.

Overall: 7.5/10, nearly an 8 — more content could push it toward 9/10 for arcade hoops.
